ICANN has approved plan for expansion of number of generic top-level domains

For some time there are discussions regarding the fact that the number of generic top-level domains (gTLD) could be increased from recent 22. Today these rumours have been sanctified. ICANN has actually approved the plan of the following procedure.

Interested subjects in new generic domain can apply till 12. January 2012 by filling the specified form of 360 pages and is subject to a fee of $185 000. The time period for suggesting the new gTLD will be then 90 days. Source: ICANN.

The last big change in generic domains was introduction of .COM domain almost 26 years ago. Therefore the possibility of registering the domains like .SEX or .PRAGUE is further significant change which influence is a matter of live discussions also on the ICANN web itself.
